Murchison Working

Before I carry on its 16 days till im bk in the UK!!!!!!!

Last few days ive been working out in the paddocks helping clean them up from this years tomatoes, 1st day I was help to pick up irrigation pipes and stuff, ever since then ive bin driving the fork lift tractor aound picking up all these rolled up sheet off plastic off the rows that the tomatoes grown from under and tipping them into a tipper truck, even then, the guy who was driving the tipper did as much picking up as with the forks.

The other lunchtime, I saw (I called it a tornado but apparently torandos are born from the sky downwards and "whirlwinds" are born from the ground upwards) anyway it looked like a tornado although alot smaller, about 1.5 - 2meters wide and it started at about 7meter high, but as the vortex climbed skywards it lift off the ground and kept going for about 100ft up, was mint, never seen anything like that before, they supposed to be quite common in dry dusty flat fields.

Other than that all im doing is biding my time before returning home, which i cant wait for really, gonna be ace bein hoe, seein everyone, going out in familiar places, roll on good summer times :)

C u all very soon.

ps I tried uploadin some pics 2nite but the blogger site is bein dog slow 2nite, will try again 2moro :)

Road Trip Over :( Back to Murchison :)

On the 26th I had a chat with Jo and Laura and we decided that we were gonna call it quits on the work front in Port Lincoln as me and Jo really wernt getting that much work sent our way, and Laura was but she didnt really want to work by herself so she didnt mind dropping the work, so on saturday Jo and I went down to the travel shop and Jo booked him and Laura on a flight to Perth departing on Sunday 28th we got all packed up, loaded the van up and left Port Lincoln around 5:20pm'ish, I drove straight round to Snowtown, about 750k, arrived at 10:30pm, they didnt bother setting up there tent they just folded down the front seat and slept there.

28th May
Drove Jo and Laura to Adelaide Airport for there flight to Perth, we said our goodbyes, although ill meet up with them again wen i get bk to oz later in the year, hopefully they will still be in Perth with the lads or somewere in WA, (well meet up and read more Gos mags Jo, dnt worry son, and Laura im saving the Back To Front Lionel Special tape all for you...maybe a copy of it, dnt think i could part with the original :) and I headed east towards Melbourne (I was headed here to pick up my wetsuit and say hello to James Gardiner). Got down to Tailem Bend, filled up on Jungle Juice and followed the signs to Melbourne however after the sign the road split in 2 an it didnt say which way Melbourne was, so if in doubt swing a left, headed down the Ouyen Highway, via Lameroo, Pinaroo and Ouyen funninly enough, then I got on the Calder Highway towards Charlton, were I was running drastically low on fuel, with zero dolloars in my ozzy account to buy any petrol, how i got around this was withdrawing on my english debit card (this can only be done from ATM's only though) so I dropped in the local battle cruiser and asked if there were any ATM's "all broken" I was told, moments later they were tryin to rope me in to get smashed for the night, "forget drivin to Melbounre, come and get smashed, we'll syphon you some fuel later from the ute!" I passed up on this golden oppourtunity and got on my hunt for fuel, luckily 2 towns on I came across a service station in Wedderburn, like a pheonix rising from the flames, it saved me well and truely, there also was a big sign sayin pizza for sale, unluckily for me the lady said theyd just stopped serving and i was outta luck (this place woz in the middle of nowhere, I think i actually woke her up driving into the station and she tells me I just missed it....lyin bitch hahahaha fair play to her, i wud have probably done the same) anyway dealed with the hunger pains (it wasnt like i was gonna die, just got pulled in by the multicoloured writing on the chalk board, however now the pizza seed had been planted there was no stoppin it) headed to Bendigo and the van practially homed in on Dominoe's Pizza, had a Supreme Puffection Large (Im never havin a Puffection pizza ever again, its like eatin a giant flat pasty, did the usual burn roof of mouth trick with the first slice...why do we all do it??? we all know its just came out of a red hot oven but cant resist tryin to handle the heat???) anyhoo drove on to Gisbourne which is about 50k out of Melbourne, slept here cus I always have trouble findnig somewere free in Melbourne to park the van. Distance Travelled today 895k thats 560 miles.

29th May
Got up and out of Gisbourne for 10am with a cuppa tea from the local cafe, in Melbourne for 11am, drove straight through the city and out to St.Kilda were I met up with James and his missus at there hostel on Barclay Street, cant remember the name, but it was fairly nice, kind of felt ol english manner style in the front room, we all chatted an caught up on different gossip, there friend also joined us, we all went out to use the internet, I had to give James a copy of his photos (he had his bag stolen in NZ and luckily I took a copy of his camera b4 he left, so he didnt loos too many pics of Murch) We went for somet to eat and a beer and then by the time 3:30pm had come about I thought id best make a move to get bk to Murch, i didnt wana hit rush hour drivin through the city. Got out to Tullamarine an picked my wetsuit up, then got on the Hume Highway bk to Murch, rocked up about 6:30pm, dinner was waitin for me :) sorted the computer out here were im stayin so Wayne and Kath can access the internet. Hit the hay earlyish cus I had to be up for work at 7am.

Total round k's clocked on the road trip doorstep to doorstep 5500k thats 3437miles...God knows how many times longer than england that is???

Port Lincoln

Rite finally finished odd writing about the road trip. Been in port lincoln a week now, we've all got jobs at this place called PLTP Port Lincoln Tuna Processors working night shift in the factory, as i said in the previous post the job can be a little repetitive to say the least, but its not hard by any stretch of the imagination, I mean i started at 6pm the last couple of days and finished at 5am and 6am, its all in the mind really i think, get a couple of yamns out and then carry on. But ive bin driving the fork lift which adds abit of difference to my role, not so gud wen u smash the back end of the fork lift into a pallet of sauces though, funny though, was funny, they asked me if i could drive a forky and I said yes, but i dnt have a license, kind of knowing that ive only driven a fork lift a few times, and i thought whats the worst that cud happen, so anyway Tracey told me to move this pallet, so i wizzed over and then attempted to pick this pallet up of about 3000 or so pouches of sauce, and i forgot to lift the fork so that the pallet wouldnt slip off the fork, and it started slipped wen i picked it up, by this point, adrenilin was pumpin as i knew i was bein watched....meanwhile Laura is chattin to one of the other ladies and one of them said, "look the pommy bastard said he could drive a fork lift" hahaha we laughed about it over break, but im alot better now than then.

The three of us went out lastnite for a seafood meal, as were in the seafood capital of australia it wud be rude not to try the local cuisine. I hade a Devilled Prawns in a Cream Chilli sauce, with sweet chilli cheese bread, and then for a main i had Marinara, which was fish, scallops, prawns, calamari in a tomato'y kind of sauce with spaghetti, really nice, fillin as hell.

At the caravan Park there are alot of girly type mags floatin about everywere, so me and jo and laura have bin readin all up on the latest gossip on the stars and stuff as there's not to much else to do, well the other day Jo and Laura had been out and Laura was in fits of laughter tryin to tell me what had just happen, and she finally got it out that they were walking past a news stand and he saw Britney crying on the front of a mag, Jo quickly grabbed the mag and flicked through but to his shock he was moved from the que. They were later on a walk and she quotes:

Jo: "Laura, I wish I had never seen the cover of the mag with britney on, now I have to buy it."

Me: Silence

Jo: "I feel really sorry for her, I mean these celebrities live in a fantisy world, they will never find true love, look at J Lo..."

Me: Silence

Jo: "never speak of this again"

As you can see its started to effect, there is not a mag on the caravan park that we havnt filled in the crossword, suduko on and read 3 times over, as they dnt seem to be replenishing old mags with new ones.

Well even though weve only been here a week, the work is not really steady so we talked today and have said that we'll probably head off after weve all been paid on monday, cus its costs to live and doss about wen ur not working, so we mite cut our losses and hi ho silva outta here. This is a pic of a local restaurant the Ming Inn Chinese.

I'll keep u posted. and I promise to upload pics of me in the hair and beard net from work, as im ot gonna lie i look ridiculas, also i have to wear wellies, and trust me after 12 hours in wellies, your freet look like uve just jumped out of the bath ud bin in for 12 hours.

anyways, take it easy, speak soon.

ps im bk in 21 days :)

Road Trip: Lincoln Gap to Port Lincoln

Pretty much drove straight to Port Lincoln today from near Whyalla, only stopped for fuel and number 2's. Absolutley one of the most boring drives of my life, from port augusta for about 200k there is nuthin, that means, nuthin, occasionally ull pass a car comin in the other direction, but as for things to look at like scenary, its just scrub as far as the eye can see, same goes forthe roads, they just go on forever!!!

Port Lincoln info center really helpfull, telling us were we can go look for work and were the caravan park is, went and applied at 2 places, really wiered havin to fill in application forms and stuff, but we did it anyway, knowing we probably wudnt get called till monday at the earliest. We checked into Kirton Point Caravan Park, pretty nice places, althougb no communal room or tv anywere, but nice facilities and a stunning view of Boston Bay, Boston Island in the distance and Nation Park to the Right.

Since I left Murchison I clocked around 3600k which is around 2236 miles.

Road Trip: Snowtown to Lincoln Gap

Left Snowtown, filled up on fuel and headed to Port Pirie aka no-point-ville, as the lonely planets description of this place goes something like this "unless you have any desire in looking at huge smeltting plants the there is no need to stop here" how true they are, went to the local tourism place and shocking, what did they have for sale on the counter but a book called " Faces of the Smelter" i didnt spend too long in there, bk to the car park and I decided to cut Laura's Hair, she had asked me a couple of days before, but due to us always getting to places at nite, and then getting goonified, there was never a convienient time, so i set up the hair salon aka the stool in the cark park and got to work on my master peice!!!!! Finished product, pile of hair on the floor, client happy, everyones a winner :) As we were here we thought (I thought) I wouldnt mind seein what a smelter actaully looked like so we went over to this viewing place were the tourist people said we could see the plant from and so i drove to within about 20ft of the waters edge and the van all of a sudden became stuck in quicksand type shit!!!! i jumped out and started to sink abit myself...immediately i thought VERY BAD!!! I saw a chap over the way in a 4x4 and flagged him over, luckily he had a chain and he just hoisted the van striaght out, tooeyeze he said hahaha, after closer inspection of the quicksand it dawned on my that obviously this was a sort of esturey and the tide had gone down, thus a full day in the sun had dried the surface, immitating drivable ground, how wrong i was!!!! I soon as i was out of trouble i flipped Port Pirie the bird and vowed to never darken the area with my presence ever again!!!! Next stop Port Augusta! On the highway to Port Augusta we stopped at this fruit and veg shop and brought strangely some fruit..all Jo goes on and on about how much he likes apples and here they had a box of about a tonne, he was well happy :) i brought a big seedless watermelon to make vodka melon although it would later fall out of the van and smash to bits all over my feet. Got to Port Augusta and found out were the local internet was, free again at the local library, wicked, after prattin about on the net, sampled more local pies and went to woolies for dinner ingredients (Ive bin really lucky cus ever since its bin me, Jo and Laura I havnt cooked dinner once...well Jo's a chef and Laura likes to cook, not that i dnt but im the chauffer :) Went to the drive through bottle'o and brought yet again more goon, seems like im buyin a 4 litre box everyday, the guy gave us loads of boxs to start a fire with and we headed round onto the Eyre Peninsula, first major town from Port Augusta, didnt make it that far, pulled into a picnic area along the Lincoln gap were we made camp, had dinner, made a proper fire and got wrecked :)

Road Trip: Mannum to Snowtown via Adelaide

Today we decided to actually get to Adelaide, trouble is the map im using doesnt quite into the detail we need to drive round the small country roads we were drivin, but by accident we came across the Giant Rockinghorse (near Gumeracha) was by far the biggest giant thing ive seen in oz, so big infact you could climb the legs, body and neck of the horse to different viewing platforms, not that there was alot to see as it didnt breech the height of the tree's in the surrounding area. They also had 1 of the sign posts with all the distances labelled on it from around the world (London was 16687km away). Backon the road for Adelaide, finally got somewhere close and decided to ask some1 if we goin in the rite direction, i happen to pick the only Jordi in oz i reckon to ask, although he didnt seem happy wen i asked if he was from Sunderland hahaha he laughed about it. Finally got into the city center after some more driving about in different direction, parked up and went for a look and the shops, tried a city pie, best one soo ffar i mite add, got bord of lookin round the shops as non of us had any money, so we hit the Museum, free to get in, couldnt go wrong, was pretty good, loads of interestin stuff about australia and wildlife etc. Next stop Glenelg, this is Adelaides answer to St.Kilda in Melbourne although its alot more refined, really nice smart modern looking place, guess what we cudnt find the touist office, so i asked in the police station and they kindly gave me direction on how to get there, the lady wasnt overly helpful, but gave us some number of nearby caravan parks we could try, as they were all 40 bucks a head per nite we decided to skiddadle out of Adelaide, we did catch a glimpse of the sun setting over the Gulf of St.Vincent, shame we couldnt stay to watch it dissapear, i dont think ive ever seen the sunset over the ocean???

Left Adelaide on the wrong road, was heading for Port Wakefield but instead was heading bk to Mannum, quich stop at a petrol station and luckily there was a guy there who was going that way so he said we cud follow him, bk on the rite track, started to feel abit tiered of driving so I pulled in at a little place called snowtown and we camped there for the night (Ive only just found out that this quiet little country place is were 2 of Australias worst serial killers lived until around 6 years ago, they were locked up after confessing to the murders of 18 people and hiding them in barrels).

Road Trip: Kingston SE to Mannum

Left in direction of Adelaide, stopped at Tailem Bend, hit the tourist information center, the guys was abit strange but friendly all the same, told us were we can camp in places we shudnt, like football grounds, racecourses etc, sampled the local pies, curry this time, wasnt really impressed, it was no curry taste imparticular, just spicy...thumbs down tailem bend bakery!!! Grabbed a shower at the shell garage truck stop $2 bucks, then drove onto Murray Bridge to find somewhere to camp, this didnt go as planned, as everywhere we stopped it was clearly sign posted "no camping" so guess what, we paid the tourist center in Murray Bridge a visit, very helpful ladies, cheap internet and free tea and coffee, so we made use of the place whilst we were there, they told us there was a free camping ground in a place called Mannum which was about 30k's away, before leaving Murray Bridge we messed about in the reject shop and brought the ingredients for dinner from woolies, oh goon and petrol also but theyre almost necessities now!!! got to Mannum and had to take the free ferry ride over the river, was pretty cool, set up camp and me and Jo went to look for fire wood, and we bumped into the german guy form sawpitt who we'd met a few days ago, wood collecting was atrosious, and so after seeking advice from the german dude, we went bk into town to buy some fire wood from a petrol station (more ferry crossings later) we were back, got the fire stoked, tea was being cooked, all that was left to do now was consume goon :) another succesful nite.

Road Trip: Canunda NP to Kingston SE

Headed to Beachport (also known as The Labyrinth we cudnt get out of this town, it was ridiculas, there were no signs to direct you out of town) followed this one road for about 5k and its like the road builders thought they'd stop as they met a cliff edge, so we had to turn back!!!! We should have left a trail of breadcrumbs to show us the way out, however i think this tactic has been applied before to no avale, besides we had no bread...we're poor backpackers!!! Next stop Robe, en route we passed a cyclist who we saw in Mt.Gambier, so we stopped and thought
we'de ask him what the hell he was up to, he'd cycled from Hobart and was on his way to Adelaide, he was from Holland, friendly chap, but god i dnt know how he managed to cycle all that way, i got bord driving down them, some of the roads are so striaght, u cant see the end of them, fair play to him though. Got to Robe, hit the tourist info center only to find out they have free internet access, so we grabbed all the internet gear and madecamp round the computers for a couple of hours, sampled the local pies and drove on to Kingston SE, were we stopped off and saw Larry thr giant Lobster (Kinda scary giant creature that resembles a lobster). In kingston I drove past the information center twice, because it was disguised as a petrol station, well it was the corner of the shop inside the station and the lady who worked there doubled up as the tourist guide, she was very helpful, although she seemed really scared, like we were the first people she'd ever helped....mayb we were??? she recommended we stay at this place called The Granites, not really great but good to the lie on them at night when ur smashed!!!! which we did later that nite, infact Jo has stained his Prada coat with whatever substance coated the granites. Laura also dragged Jo into the sea again, he really didnt look like he wanted to, but it was funny all the same lol :)

Road Trip: Narrawong to Canunda NP

Pauls and co had decided to visit the Grampians today and so me Jo and Laura decided not to go along as it would be a 600k round trip back to the coast and we couldnt afford the fuel, so we all went our seperate ways, although Jo and Laura will be meeting up with the lads in Perth, its just we are on a lot shorter shoestring budget than the other guys.

We headed to South Australia - Mt Gambier, tried the local sheppards pie and mcdonalds, ohhh and how can i forget the tourist information center, shaped like and old pirate ship, the old hag in there was very unhelpful, and i can only put this down to us being english, this may sound odd but throughout my time in australia ive met a few ozzy's that have no need to be grumpy towards us other than the fact that we just seem to travel and spend money and never seem to work....well there the key, you only see backpackers wen their travelling becuase they worked and saved to move on, hence the look of travelling and just spendin money!!!! It was raining by the time we left the info center, we headed for Blue Lake, Valley Lake and Mutton Chop Lake, I cant tell you 2 much about these lakes as it was pissin it down the temptation to stop and admire the view was dampened (forgive the pun) We also visited a sink hole in the center of town, it wasnt anything special, just a big hole in the ground, again the rain was hampering us, so we decided to up sticks and hit the road. Now in SA we had to put our clocks back half an hour.

We drove onwards further in south australia, and en route i spotted another wind farm, so a quick detour later and we were driving this windy road the loops round nearly all of the wind turbines, it was ace, you really dont get a sense of how big they are until your right up close to one, which i just had to experience, i found a quite spot on the road as close to a turbine as i could get, i skipped over the fence (a very low one i might add) and ran and stood under this 70 meter tower with its 3 x 40 meter long blades swoooshing around above me, it was ace, Jo was standing at the side of the road tryin to take a pic of my, unfortunatly they all turned out abit blurry due to the camera trying to focus on the spinning blades, never mind, u can see a small dot at the bottom of the tower, thats me :) on to Canunda National Park and camped by the beach, after setting up camp we paid the beach a visit, laura being laura :) had to go in, although came out rather sharply after we spotted blue bottle jelly fish scattered all over the beach!!! Back at camp we assesed the stock of goon available, it was horendously low, so we made a supplies trip to millicent to get more goonage, bk to camp, dinner then smashed hahaha :)

Road Trip: Narrawong Sawpitt Picnic Area

We decided over breakfast that we would hold up at Sawpitt for 1 more night, during breakfast a guy called H came over from another campsite in the same area to show us this camping guide to Australia, it showed you all of the camp sites, whether they are are free or not and all of the things included with staying there, we all had a chat, he lent us the book to peruse at our leisure. We headed into Portland to use the free amenities, we all needed a shower desperatly. I brought an axe from Mitre 10 (for chopping wood as we were all gettin sick of ruining our hands. Us lads grabed a Chinese meal from a local restaurant, and we headed to Cape Bridge Water to watch Victoria's largest mainland colony of Australian fur seals around the cape, it was a 1 hour walk there and a 1 hour walk back, it was ace to watch the seals playing and getting up seal stuff. Drove back to camp and began the nightly ritual of getting trollied :)

Road Trip: Johanna Beach to Narrawong

We headed for Portland today, via "ALL" of the sights along the way, these included:

The 12 Apostles (amazing to see, however there arnt 12, because some have fallen over, but new apostles are being carved everyday from sea erosion)

Gibson Steps (these are just steps that lead to the beach, im not sure why they are a site seeing attraction?!?!?! We actually drove back fro the apostles to see these)

Loch Ard Gorge (a gorge named after of the clipper ship Loch Ard ran aground on June 1st 1878, many died however some survivors found shelter in the gorge)

The Arch (sorry cant remember to much about the arch, although very similar to London Bridge

London Bridge ( a bridge formed by sea erosion, but unluckily for 2 tourists bk in 1990, the first arch collapsed into the ocean leaving them stranded)

The Grotto (This is the last touristy site, it is a Sink Hole and at Low tide (when we were there, it was a wicked view of the ocean, with a stunning reflection from the pool, the ocean beyond the pool is a little less calm, infact id go as far to say, it was deadly lookin, if you fell in there, you'd be brown bread)

We then only stopped at the The Bay of Martyrs very similar to the twelve apostles, just not as eroded, still very nice scenary.

We decided after vistiting the tourist info center in Portland that we would stay at a free campsite at Narrawong called Sawpitt Picnic Area, highly recommend this place, really well set up, we got a good fire going in fire area, had tea, and guess what, we all got smashed again on goon :)

Road Trip: Lorne to Johanna Beach

May 11 - Left Lorne in the direction of Apollo Bay, we pulled up at guess what...another tourist information center, again the girl was really helpfull and she even helped us plan the next leg of our journey to some degree. Me and Adam headed into the town cneter grabbin some chips from a local shop, the guy was an absolute plank, dnt even think he'd ever worked in a fish and chip shop, he looked at me gone out when i asked for salt and viniger, anyway by the by, caught up with the other at the laundrymat and Mike had just brought a new hat for 30bucks, and he lost it from the shop to the laundry, so he reluctantly went back and brought another one after he cudnt find it. We decided to 0121 out of Apollo Bay and head into the Otway National Park (The Great Ocean road actually goes straight through it but we went in deeper is what i mean, this is also were the great ocean road no longer has the great ocean feel to it, as its all mainland roads). First Stop Triplet falls, it is a wide triple cascading fall in the middle of the rainforest, we took the 40min 900 meter walk (by accident i might add), really picturesque, one of the most stunning waterfalls I have seen in Australia. We then drove to the Otway Fly Tree Top Walk otherwise known as the biggest waste of money EVER!!! Me, Paul and Mike all paid to go in, however, Wayne and Adam snook by the entrance and in unnoticed (lucky bastards...$17 better off) we begun the trial round and we knew it was going to go down hill from the first attraction...The Old Stump, this was a 60 year old tree stump that had been cut down, we all laughed and thought ok we'll give it another chance, attraction 2...The Window of Time, to the untrained eye just a bunch of sparadically placed trees, apparently we were supposed to be seein how the landscape had evolved over the past soooo many years....I sharnt go on, its trying my patience typing this now Just be warned anyone who is tempted to visit this appealing attraction should take 20 bucks from your wallet on a windy day, let go of and chase it down the street, you'd be far more entertained!!!) Although the walk has 1 small thing to offer, after we had finished the walk we waited at the bottom of the track for transport provided for immobile people...a golf buggy, excellent fun, the guy didnt hang about tearin along the track. We then drove to Johanna Beach via Blue Johanna Road, another terribley bumpy track, but really nice campsite, visited the beach, again, really ruff, but one of the nicest beaches we've been to on the coast. Got gooned up again before getting a one way ticket to snoozeville.

Road Trip: Torquay to Lorne

Destination Lorne. Left Torqauy for Bells Beach, popular surfin spot, tell u now u wudnt get me on a board out there, the waves were 2/3 - meter waves, good view of the coast though, me and some of the other climbed the "Do not Climb, Dangerous Cliffs" sign (first of many) to get better pics of the area. Laura and Jo went for a paddle in the sea (Jo denies it but im sure i saw him go in). We all ran bk to the van because heavy rain started to come in. We then wen back to Torquay becasue Wayne had to pick up
his coat that he accidntly left there, after this straight to Anglesea were I used the Geny for the

first time in the carpark to boil the kettle for a cuppa. We then headed to Split Point Lighthouse at Airleys Inlet (this is the Lighthouse from Round the Twist and also some Mad Max films were also filme here...some trivia for you) Finally got to Lorne (first stop Tourist Center, very helpful) We then went to Erskine Falls, very impressive, and being the good british tourists we are, we had to try and climb all over it, however Canadian Mike went for a slip rite under the falls, was funny. Me,Wanye and Adam trekked on down the river to another Waterfall called straw falls, equally as pretty before heading bk to the vans. After the dramatic drive out of Erskine we drove to out camp destination at Big Hill, but as we drove straight past it and ended up bk in Lorne we headed for Sharps Camping Park, 7k out of Lorne up the steepist, windiest, bumpiest roads ive ever driven on. Got the Generator on so we had some light, and me and Jo started to make a fire even though it was raining, every1 said "we'll never do it" and wanted nuthin to do with it, but with abit of intervention from Wayne and mine and Jo's persistance we got a inferno going!!! everyone soon huddled round the fire and we all got smashedfaced...again :)

Road Trip: Melbourne to Torquay

Got up early to meet Maja, however, I phoned her and told her i wasnt driving to St.Kilda, and she decided to come into the city instead, We got a Starbucks and cuaght up on what each of us had been up to since october'time. As i was only in a t-shirt i was freezing so we went to target for a scarf and i came out with a well nice jumper and scarf for 40 bucks or somethin, we met up with the lads, grabbed some sushi, ansd then said our goodbyes (was abit wierd really cus its not like sayin goodbye "ill see you 2moro" its goodbye, we mite not meet again kind of thing, very bizzarre, we'll meet up again, just a matter of time) Headed bk to the gang at nomads, packed to van up with all Jo and Lauras gear, I got directions from the reception at nomads on how to get out of the city in the direction we wanted and we left Melbourne to drive the Great Ocean Road. First stop was Torquay Tourist infromation center (the first of about 6 million we wud go in) to be honest they wernt that helpful, I dont even reckon they lived in Torquay, they knew nuthin about the area, but give um theirs dues they know how to give out leaflets!!! That night we checked into Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park, very nive place, good facilities, free tv room, good kitchen, dodgy automatic 4 minute showers though, which cud only be activated by a button conviently located nowhere near the showers!!! Played Wayne at tablefootball alot, and didnt win 1 game, terrible at that game i am terrible!! We didnt drink really that nite apart from a free-bi-beer given to us by some a very friendly dutch couple. We all hit the hay pretty early, most of the gang we hangin out their asses from the nite in Melbourne.

Barmah Muster :)

Day 1 Barmah Wednesday 26/04/06

We got all packed up and ready to leave for Barmah in the morning, me and Wayne filled up the station wagon, the Ute and the van up down in Murch, also filled up on gas and 2 20 litre jerry cans for the generator. We headed off for Barmah and before we’d been on the road 30 mins we lost Kath and Brody in the station wagon so Wayne and me pulled over and I cracked a VB open before heading off to see if I could see them somewhere en route but no luck, I headed back to where Wayne had pulled off the road and we headed to Barmah in the hope Kath was on her way. When we arrived at the Barmah local shops sure enough Kath and Brody popped out had been there for quite awhile, we got some munchies from the shops and drove into the Barmah Forest. We set up camp at the same spot they camped in last year, firstly we set up and electric fence perimeter to keep the horses in, we made it around ½ an acre big as there would be more horses arriving in the coming days, for now though it was just for Harley and Attitude, Harley is a Appaloosa Gelding and Attitude is an Arab Mare, once they were in the paddock we continued to set up camp, I parked my van close to the float so that one of the roller tarps on the side of the float could be attached to the van so that I had cover in case it rained. We got the tent set up for Wayne, Kath and Brody, then we set about collecting wood to get a fire going, all the wood was dry as a bone, so the fire started really easily, Wayne set up the hot water service he’d mad next to the fire (this is a beer keg with a brass spout added to the top side of the barrel, then as your pour cold water into the top it pushes hot water out of the spout, and with it being in the fire all day everyday, hot water is constantly on tap) just as we were finishing setting up camp, a lady called from the stock yards for some help, so me, Wayne and another guy from a nearby camp ran over to see what was the problem, there was a Clydesdale mare that couldn’t get up, she had strained some muscles in her back walking through the swamps (as the horse had shoes on they kind of acted like suction caps on the horses feet and she had pulled something trying to pull her feet out of the swampy land) the lady wanted our help to pull the horse away from the fence so we tied some ropes around its feet and dragged it away from the edge of the yard, the 4 of us really struggled to move this huge horse, it was ridiculously heavy, but we shifted it and Wayne checked the horses back. We headed back to camp for dinner and beers, by about 8:30 we decided to ride the horses down to the river for a drink, so we saddled up and headed off, Harley was well behaved, I think any problems I thought I had with him were more my own, through lack of riding experience, I walked him into the water, whilst Wayne struggled to get Attitude anywhere near the water, rode the horses back and put them away, and sat around the fire and got stuck into a few more beers!!!!

Day 2 Barmah Thursday 27/04/06

I got woken up to the sound of Brody bashing on my windows telling me that he was going to play over near the stockyards, this was at about 6am, then again at 7am he told me he was going to play somewhere else, I went back to sleep and got up around 830am’ish, had some weet-bix and toast for breaky, and just chilled around the fire for an hour or so before Me and Wayne decided to go for a ride, We saddled up, the sun was blazing and we set off into the scrub, through swamps, water logged plains, through bushes, over fallen trees, cutting around and through dense trees ducking for low hanging branches. We didn’t see any wild brumbies but on the way back we saw a huge black snake, that didn’t seem to bother Harley but the Arab shit herself and so we came another way back to camp, Wayne kept a good hold of her, he doesn’t let them get away with anything. We got back and I was soaked half way up both legs because the swamps and water we had been through, it was ace. We’d been out for around 4/5 hours, we covered around 10 to 15k that days, I was a bit sore but ok, water the horses and got stuck into more beer and food J
A bit later that evening about 830pm’ish I said lets go for a night ride, both of us being abit pissed were well up for it, so off we went down the main track into the forest, but keeping to the edges, well I saw Wayne up into just duck for a branch, now I couldn’t quite see it as there was no moon a\out and it was pitch black, I mean, cant see your hand in front of your face black, and before I knew it I clonked me noggin on this branch, it let out and awful cracking noise and fell between me and Harley, well the beer I was drinking went 1 way and the horse the other, I dropped 1 of the rains to try and get the branch of us and pulled him round with the left rain, Christ my heart was going 10 to the dozen, he wasn’t gonna stop, but we both calmed down, Wayne absolutely pissed himself laughing, he thought it was hilarious, but anyway, we carried on down the track and then both horse stopped and listened intently and Wayne thought it best we head back, incase there was a mob of Brumbies up ahead, he said they probably kick the shit out of Harley cause he was a Gelding that acted like a stallion, so we head back for more goon and beers!!!!

Day 3 Barmah Friday 28/04/06

Again nicely woken up by Brody telling me were he was off to play at 6am, like to say I was getting used to it, but I’d be lying, sat around for a lot of the morning around the fire, Connie and her children and there friends arrived throughout the morning, there was Connie, Mati, Danny, Nicole & Ty, Luke, Ash, Mick & Lauren her friend ohh and not forgetting the Kiwi Lamby, there were a few other but I’m struggling to remember there names right now, sorry guys.

Gerard one of Wayne’s friends who has been coming to the Barmah Muster for the last 17 years came up to our camp to see if we wanted to go for a ride after lunch, I was well up for it, so was Wayne, after lunch we headed down and off into the swamps we went. We went a lot deeper into the forest than we had on the previous day, and after a few hours of riding we fund a mob of Brumbies, there were 6 in total and a little fille, Gerard didn’t mess about in chasing after them galloping off, but I was to sure I was up for tearing after wild horses through the scrub, maybe if I had abit more riding experience but I wasn’t that confident, didn’t wana be the next Christopher Reeve, so us 2 carried on and then we spotted another mob, I could feel Harley heart pounding like it was trying to get out of his body when he saw them, Wayne wanted a closer look so we swapped horses and he took Harley for a hack through the trees and chased after them. I stayed with Attitude and we waited for Wayne to come back, wasn’t 20 seconds and Wayne was out of sight due to the denseness of the scrub, and it hits you then when your all by yourself, that you actually are all by yourself, and its kinda cool I mean being out on horseback in dense forestry away from, cars, people, phones, the internet everything that you get hampered with in normal daily life, and you couldn’t get any further away from it out here, you feel kind of free, really ace feeling. Anyway Wayne came back telling me all about the chase and how he got close to them, but he was struggling to keep up with them because they were just flying through scrubland and over logs, under trees and around things, taking really big strides, not having to think about were they were treading…. they knew cause this is there territory!!!

We swapped back and went off looking for this Brumbies catcher’s stockyard, we rode for a while but to no avail, we couldn’t find it so we started heading back, the weather had been pretty rubbish all day…overcast and threatening looking, well now it started to rain, and it never stopped, got soaked fairly quickly and then just colder and colder, and we were still 4 hours from camp, we followed the saw mill stockyards through the forest, until we cut out of the forest to try and find a track which we eventually did, and Wayne looked at which way the majority of the animals tracks were heading and we went in the same direction, as this would probably lead us to camp, we finally came to a bridge that Wayne recognised and he said were about 2 hours solid riding from camp, I’d been in the saddle 5 and a half hours already, I was about shot, we carried on and cut back into the scrub, we came back to the far edge of the swamps nearer to camp, this to me was a major relief although now darkness had started setting in, pretty quickly, this didn’t bother me too much as we were on familiar ground….or so I thought!!! We came to the last open plain to cross before heading back into the forest to get back to camp, and by the time we had crossed and were back in the woods, it was pitch blackola nothing looked familiar anymore, infact the only thing that looked familiar was everything, everything looked the same, some things were slightly darker then others, but with it still raining, no moon we were having trouble going in 1 solid direction because of the trees being so dense and that many low branches we had to get out of the forest quickly before 1 of us got injured including the horses. We got back out on to the plain and headed for the swamp, we followed that back towards camp until we saw some lights in the far distance through the trees, such a relief to see those lights, finally got back around 830, 9pm we’d been out all day, probably covered somewhere near 25/30k, and im still feeling the pain from that ride 4 days later!!!! So glad to get back and have some food, cus I missed lunch, so I was starving Marvin, again had more beers slept like a log!!!

Day 4 Barmah Saturday 29/04/06

Thankfully God had been listening to my prayers and Brody didn’t wake me up today J he had some new mates to play with, I slept in till about 930am and when I got up I felt like I been clubbed around the head with a 15lb sledgy and had been in a bad scrap…to put it mildly I was aching all over!!!! I chucked myself in front of the big fire and stayed there all day, I occasionally moved to another chair around the fire but that was about it. Had a Jim Beam and cola around 11 and then my next beer was about mid afternoon, the day dragged so much, everyone felt the day was going really slow, I started to feel abit better after a few cans. Jesse and Cheryl came along today, so Jesse would be riding Harley now as he is his horse, which kind of excluded me from riding, which was ok as I was really sore from the long the day before.
Today was the day of the Open Air Bush Dance, A big Semi Trailer arrived and opened up into a big stage were the various bands would play, in front of it was the dance area, about 6 inches of saw dust from the local saw mill made the dance floor, so comfy under foot and ok if you fall over on it J the main group on was Steve Ford & The Flange, they were really good, everyone got involved, aint gonna lie I was smashed by the end of the night, so I pulled the rip cord and head back to camp for a couple more round the fire, ended up getting up to stupid antics with Jesse like biting the electric fence and stuff, was fun J but then when I started to fall asleep infront of the big fire, Lamby shouted “Oi Pome get to bed!!! You keep fallin asleep!!!” I just got up and stumbled towards me van, I don’t even remember fallin to sleep? Hahaha

Day 5 Barmah Sunday 30/04/06

Pretty much recovery day today, everyone had decided that we were gonna go home today, so we all got on with dismantling camp. Jesse was out on the Goose Swamp Muster, they were rounding up the last of the cattle, I was a little disappointed because I really wanted to go on this muster but the only horse I had to ride was Attitude and she was still abit temperamental and I didn’t fancy getting bucked off, but never mind, there’s next year J I went down to the gate were they were herding the cattle to watch them all run through, was pretty good, watchin all the riders and cattle dogs keeping the cows under control, and the guy frantically trying to count them as they all ran through the gate. Saw Jesse and asked him how he got on, he said he survived a couple of bucks but all round went pretty well.

Walked back to camp and helped pack everything else away that we had used over the last 5 days. You might have noticed I hadn’t mentioned showering, the last shower I had was on Tuesday, so I was glad to be heading home so I could get a good wash, I was starting to feel abit grubby, but you have to get into the camping spirit.

I hooked up Kath’s trailer ready to rock and roll and help Wayne get Harley and Attitude into the float, although we had some problems getting the Arab on board she eventually got on with abit of persuasion!!! We just beat the rain, well just, we got abit of a showering when we were loading the horses, but we were ok. About 15k’s down the road Kath pulled over, I hoped out and ran over…. the trailer had come off!!!! I had locked the trailer on properly, so I sorted it out and we got back on our way. We got back around 345pm unpacked, had a couple of cuppa’s and went for a nice long hot shower, soooo gud J

Ps for all you people that emailed me askin if I needed a razor, im gud thanks ive shortened the beared down now, as it was getting abit out of control, and I was sick of combing it hahahaha
